Police Staff are members of Tayside Police who do not have the same legal powers as Police Officers, but who do provide vital support functions in order for Tayside Police to operate effectively. Tayside Police Recruitment - Photo of police staff

There are a wide variety of roles that are covered by Police Staff including admin and clerical, cleaning and maintenance, analysis and customer contact, as well as more specialised roles such as legal, HR, finance and procurement.

Police Staff are critical to the operational effectiveness of the Force and without their skills and knowledge Tayside Police would not be able to provide the high quality of service it does. With well over 100 different types of job roles requiring a diverse range of skills and knowledge it means there may be a role just right for you.

The Process

Each job has its own job description which details the knowledge, skills and experience required for the role and if you are interested in applying you must be able to satisfy us that you meet the essential requirements (marked with an E) and where possible the desirable requirements (marked with a D).

Most jobs that we advertise are keenly contested and therefore if you are keen on a job you must take the time to tell us how you are right for the job. One good way is to go down the knowledge, skills and experience section of the job description and write on the application form how you meet each criteria.

Remember you don't just have to use examples from previous work or education. You may have good experience dealing, for instance, with budgets in your home life, or as a Treasurer of a club or group you are in. You may have hobbies or interests that can provide good examples or you may have caring responsibilities that demonstrate good problem solving skills.

The Interview

If you are short-listed most jobs will require you to be interviewed. This can appear very daunting but there are things you can do to help you prepare. Go through the job description carefully and see how your knowledge, skills and experience match with what we are looking for. Think of some examples and write them down so they are clear in your head, so if you are asked for an example you should have one ready.

Don't think of an interview as a type of exam, but see it more as a conversation where you have a chance to talk about yourself. A lot of people feel uncomfortable telling people what they are good at, but false modesty is not going to get you a job. If you are good at something be proud of it and don't be scared to tell the interviewers. The interviewers need to be confident that they have got the right person so tell them why you are right for the job. It makes their life a lot easier.

Interviewers want you to do your best, so don't be scared to ask if you are not quite sure what they mean. It is much better to answer their question correctly after clarifying it, than completely missing the point of the question.

If you have a disability and require some adjustments to ensure you get a proper chance to demonstrate you ability to undertake the role then let us know. Tayside Police is committed to ensuring its processes are fair and will undertake any reasonable adjustment required. This is true of any part of the recruitment process so don’t be afraid to ask for help or adjustment.

If you need assistance with interview techniques then there are a number of organisations including Careers Scotland that can help.

Work and Ability Tests

As well as an interview you may be required to sit a work based test or an ability test. These tests help us determine the suitability of the candidate and are only one part of the process. These tests are carefully chosen for there suitability in assessing one or more aspect of the role. For ability tests you will be given a practice leaflet with some examples of the types of questions asked. Ability tests are selected and administered by suitably qualified individuals.

Vetting

Applicants are vetted prior to starting and you will be required to complete a relevant form. Due to the confidentiality of the information held we may not be able to tell you why you have been rejected.

Medicals

Some posts require an applicant to successfully complete a medical prior to being given an offer letter. If the post you are applying for does require a medical you will be notified.

Substance Misuse Test

As of February 2009 applicants must successfully pass a Substance Misuse Test prior to being offered a position.

Posts are advertised on this site as they arise, so if there isn't anything suitable at the moment then don't give up. You never know, the job you have always wanted may be advertised soon.

IT and Forensic Science Posts

IT and Forensic Science posts now come under the Scottish Police Services Authority and if you are interested in one of these areas you should go to their website - www.spsa.police.uk - for further information.
